I have WinXP machine and do not have any Mac machine. How do I start development for iphone applications? What software do I need?

i dunno if there is for winxp… my suggestion is to install mac on a vmware then do your coding in vmware.

xcode for your coding.
xdesigner for layout.

To develop for iPhone you definitely need a Mac. After you’ve acquired one (e.g. a Mac Mini, a refurbished Mac from Apple’s Store, or a used Mac off of eBay might be a good [relatively] inexpensive options) you need to sign up at http://developer.apple.com/ for the iPhone Developer Program, and download the latest SDK (which has XCode, the primary development tool).

VMware+MacOS X for WinXP is NOT an option because Apple does not allow for virtualization of the standard version of Mac OS X. They recently started allowing this for Mac OS X _Server_, but it would be more cost-effective to just buy Mac hardware.
